Civil Rights Attorney James Thompson Statement on Immigration Crisis
WICHITA, Kan. – Civil rights attorney and Kansas veteran James Thompson made the following statement regarding President Trump’s recent executive order ending the practice of separating families at the border:
“As a civil rights attorney, I fight every day for the rights of all and believe that the laws of our country should be fair. The rights outlined in our Constitution are not simply American rights -- they are human rights bestowed on us by our Creator. It is our job to protect and recognize those rights as we craft and enforce law.
I am relieved President Trump issued an executive order ending the cruel practice of separating families at the border. However, we need leaders in Washington who will promote sensible immigration policies that will not treat asylum-seekers as criminals, and who will address this issue with respect for human dignity rather than indifference.
This is not a Democratic or Republican issue. This is an issue that strikes at the core of who we are as Americans.”
James Thompson is a progressive Democrat, U.S. Army veteran, and civil rights attorney from Wichita who is running for the Kansas 4th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Ron Estes. Mr. Thompson's platform focuses on fighting for Kansas families, education, employment and jobs training, America's veterans and security in the global marketplace.
